Look at them Birds! 2021
Look at them Birds! investigates society’s complex and often contradictory attitudes toward women’s body hair. Through a layered exploration of fabric and photography, this piece juxtaposes human and animal bodies—feathers, fur, and other textures—against the socialized expectations imposed on women. By experimenting with fabric and printing edited photographic images onto woven material, I’ve created a wearable piece that challenges the viewer to consider natural body hair as both a symbol of identity and a point of contention.
Drawing on imagery from bodies of various genders, this work seeks to reveal the tensions between nature and cultural norms, inviting a reconsideration of what it means to be 'natural' or 'acceptable.' This work exposes how the expectations placed on women’s bodies differ not only from those on other genders but also from those on animals, highlighting the layers of societal control exerted over femininity in even its smallest details.
